The Foot and Ankle

A large range of conditions can cause pain and stiffness in the foot and ankle.  Most of these conditions are degenerative or due to a previous episode of trauma.  The MRI scan will show osteoarthritis in the ankle joint and demonstrate damage to the bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles of the foot and ankle.  A Mortons neuroma is a common condition causing pain in the forefoot which is easily treatable but commonly diagnosed late.  It is well shown on the MRI scan.

MRI scan showing localised bone necrosis in the talus not diagnosed with x-ray This 43-year-old man had complained of increasing pain in the ankle following an ankle injury 14 months previously.  X-rays at the time had been normal.  The MRI scan showed localised bone necrosis in the talus (ankle bone), accounting for his symptoms.

This 27-year-old patient was a keen jogger.  She had been prevented from running recently, due to increasing pain at the back of her ankles.  The MRI scan showed that the cause of her symptoms was an Achilles tendonitis.  This is inflammation of the Achilles tendon.  She was able to return to running after appropriate treatment. MRI scan showing inflamation of the Achilles tendon of a patient who was a keen jogger

MRI scan used to diagnose chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia This 55-year-old man had complained of increasing pain in the sole of his right foot.  The MRI scan showed chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a sheet of soft tissue in the sole of the foot.  His symptoms resolved after a local injection of steroid and long acting local anaesthetic.

That 44-year-old lady had had many years of pain in the right forefoot, which was exacerbated on walking. The MRI scan showed a Mortons neuroma, which is a swelling of the nerve which runs between the metatarsal heads. The neuroma was injected with local anaesthetic and steroid, under ultrasound guidance and this produced complete relief of her symptoms. MRI Scanning can show Mortons neuroma

MRI diagnosing a sports injury: oedema of the calcaneus indicating inflammation of the Achilles tendon This 14-year-old boy had complained of increasing pain at the back of his heel. He had been a keen athlete but was increasingly restricted by his symptoms.  The MRI scan showed oedema of the calcaneus (heel bone) indicating inflammation at the attachment of the Achilles tendon. This condition is known as an Achilles apophysitis, or Sever’s disease. He was referred to a sports injury specialist for appropriate treatment.
