Knee, Wrist, Spine, Shoulder conditions can present quite difficult challenges to a practitioner. Osteoarthritis in the early stages cannot be seen on xray, but detection with MRI might improve the clinical outcome. Here you might find some useful help in deciding, if a MRI-scan is indicated.

The cervical spine is the most mobile section of the spinal column, and has to support the weight of the head for most of our waking lives; it is prone to degeneration (wear and tear), of the intervertebral discs and the seven facet joints on each side of the spine.  These degenerative changes may result in pressure on the spinal cord, or cervical nerves which can in turn cause pain in the upper limb, or weakness and numbness in the legs... The rotator cuff is the collection of muscles and tendons which support and move the upper arm. Pain in the shoulder, particularly when there is also the inability to raise the arm fully, is often due to disease of the rotator cuff. Rotator cuff disease is well shown by MRI. ..Read More

MRI is useful in the investigation of pain and stiffness of the elbow joint. Common conditions affecting the elbow include lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), medial epicondylitis  (golfer's elbow) and osteoarthritis (wear and tear).  MRI can also show traumatic lesions such as a biceps or triceps tendon rupture, tear of the collateral ligaments and bony abnormality such as avascular necrosis.  Loose bodies within the joint can usually be identified.  It is not uncommon for an unsuspected fracture to be revealed by MRI. ..Read More

MR is most useful in the investigation of unexplained pain in the wrist and hand, and when there is a suspected fracture. High quality pictures of the hand and wrist are obtained using a specialised coil and give detailed information about the bones, joints, nerves tendons and muscles. ..Read More

In middle age and thereafter osteoarthritis (wear and tear) is a very common cause of pain in the hip. This means that patients with other conditions causing hip pain may be diagnosed late, as their symptoms may be wrongly assigned to osteoarthritis.  Other conditions which can cause hip problems, and will be shown by MRI, include inflammatory arthritis, avascular necrosis, fractures of the femoral head and pelvis (not always obvious clinically) and loose bodies in the hip joint. ..Read More

MRI is the investigation of choice for patients with unexplained pain, swelling or abnormal function, such as restricted movement or intermittent locking. An MR scan can demonstrate conditions such as the following:

Osteoarthritis
("Wear and tear" or "degeneration"). This is one of the commonest joint conditions and while typically a disease of the elderly, can occur in young and middle-aged patients for a variety of reasons. These include previous joint trauma, genetic factors, high body mass index (overweight patients)or damage to the joint cartilages. The value of MR is to answer the following questions: ..Read More

A large range of conditions can cause pain and stiffness in the foot and ankle. Most of these conditions are degenerative or due to a previous episode of trauma. The MRI scan will show osteoarthritis in the ankle joint and demonstrate damage to the bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles of the foot and ankle. A Mortons neuroma is a common condition causing pain in the forefoot which is easily treatable but commonly diagnosed late. It is well shown on the MRI scan ...Read More
